Dalmatian / Non-Sporting Breed

How long have you been breeding Dalmatians?
Although many newcomers do a wonderful job of raising puppies, experience is very useful in evaluating a litter. If they are new at it, do they have the backing of someone with experience?

Why are you breeding Dalmatians?
The only reason to breed a litter of puppies is to improve the breed. AVOID: to make money, to show the kids the wonder of life, because everyone wants one, it was an accident, because puppies are cute, because I thought it would be fun.

At what age do you let the puppies leave home?
Puppies should not leave before 7 weeks. If the breeder is letting the puppies leave early, they may be cutting corners in other ways too.

Have the puppies been wormed and given their first vaccinations? Puppies are generally given vaccinations starting at 5-6 weeks, and given every 2 or 3 weeks until approximately 13-14 weeks of age.

Do you show in A.K.C. Shows and/or belong to a Dalmatian Club?
True Dalmatian fanciers will belong to at least one Dalmatian Club and will usually show their Dals to insure that their stock is the correct Dalmatian "type."

Have the parents been B.A.E.R. tested?
If they are over 2 years old, have they been tested for hip dysplasia?

These tests are done routinely by most breeders. If they haven't been done, ask why.

Have the puppies been B.A.E.R. tested?
If this test hasn't been done, there is no guarantee that a puppy can hear. If the breeder does not B.A.E.R. test, ask why. (Every line has some degree of deafness: it is linked to the spotted coat.)

Is there a health and hearing guarantee on this puppy?
Can I have my Veterinarian examine the puppy before the sale is final?

This is standard for most breeders.

Since I am buying this puppy as a pet only, may I spay/neuter it?
Most breeders REQUIRE that you "fix" pet quality pups. If they don't care if pet quality pups are bred, do you think they are responsible in other matters?

Can I call you if I have problems with the dog later?
Most responsible breeder want you to call them with your concerns.
